Did you know more people in the world own smartphones than toothbrushes? We think this is an amazing fact but also a little frightening!
As the world continues moving towards mobile first and there are many users who access internet from their Smartphone and mobile devices rather doing it on PC / Laptop.
Whilst viewing websites from a PC / Laptop still is the most popular method of browsing the web, the gap is being reduced year on year. Currently 30% of all page views is via a Smartphone or Tablet.
Since so many people own smartphones it was only a matter of time before Google started boosting rankings of sites that are mobile-friendly. On 21st April 2015 Google starting rolling out a mobile-friendly algorithm. Google announced on the Webmaster blog on 16th March 2016 that they are going to be boosting the effects of the mobile-friendly algorithm they launched back on 21st April 2015.
In May 2016 Google will start rolling out an update to mobile search results that increases the effect of the ranking signal to help users find even more pages that are relevant and mobile-friendly.
If you've already made your site mobile-friendly, you will not be impacted by this update.
Mobile Friendly websites mean searchers can more easily find high-quality and relevant results where text is readable without tapping or zooming, tap targets are spaced appropriately, and the page avoids unplayable content or horizontal scrolling.
The update last year:
- Affects only search rankings on mobile devices
- Affects search results in all languages globally
- Applies to individual pages, not entire websites
When the update happens in May, it will roll out gradually, so you will not see a major drop-off on non-mobile-friendly websites when the algorithm is pushed out.
To check if your site is mobile-friendly, you can examine individual pages with the Mobile-Friendly Test
