Tips to reduce bounce rate in Google Analytics

A common question we get asked by clients is what is bounce rate and what bounce rate is acceptable on my website?

The definition of bounce rate from Google is “Bounce Rate is the percentage of single-page sessions (i.e. sessions in which the person left your site from the entrance page without interacting with the page).”

A good Bounce Rate is not a fixed number, it depends on the page and the type of industry you are in. Visitors will leave a website when they find the information they need or give up and leave if they cannot find the information. A high bounce rate does not always mean the visitor had an unsuccessful visit, and equally, a low bounce rate does not indicate success. Since there are usually different types of content pages on a website, the type of content and the expected user behaviour will gauge what a good bounce rate should be.

Having a high bounce rate is not always a bad thing. Pages that commonly would have a high bounce rate include:

Contact us – This is a page that normally has a high bounce rate because the visitor just wanted to access basic information such as phone number or email address.

Blog articles – people often just read one blog. The blog offers an interesting article and the visitor leaves after getting value from the article.
